Dynamic vs Static QR Codes
Dynamic QR codes are sold as "editable", but they depend on a paid service staying active. Here is how they differ from static codes — and how to get editable codes without the lock-in.
The difference
A static QR code stores your destination directly in the pattern. It works forever, has no scan limits and doesn't rely on anyone's server. This is what QRLogo Studio creates.
A dynamic QR code stores a short link owned by the QR provider, which then redirects to your destination. Because the redirect sits on their server, you can change the destination later and see scan counts — but if the subscription lapses or the company closes, every printed code stops working.
Side-by-side
- Cost — static: free. Dynamic: usually a monthly subscription.
- Expiry — static: never. Dynamic: when the plan ends.
- Change destination — static: change the page it points to. Dynamic: change the redirect in the provider's dashboard.
- Scan statistics — static: through your website analytics (see QR code tracking). Dynamic: in the provider's dashboard.
- Privacy — static: no third party sees the scans. Dynamic: every scan passes through the provider.
Make an editable QR code without a subscription
You get most of the benefit of a dynamic code by pointing a static code at an address you control:
- Use a page on your own website, such as
yourbrand.com/menu. Edit the page whenever you like; the printed code never changes. - Or set up a redirect on your domain, such as
yourbrand.com/go/flyer. Most hosting panels, and WordPress plugins like Redirection, let you change where it points at any time. - Add UTM tags to the link so your analytics counts the visits from the code.
Because the redirect lives on your domain, it keeps working for as long as you own the domain — no vendor can switch it off.
Frequently asked questions
Does QRLogo Studio make dynamic QR codes?
Not currently. It makes static codes, which never expire. To change the destination later, point the code at a page or redirect on your own website.
Do static QR codes expire?
No. The content is in the code itself, so it works as long as the destination exists.
Can I track scans of a static QR code?
Yes, indirectly. Add UTM parameters to the link and the visits show up in Google Analytics or similar tools.
When is a dynamic code worth paying for?
If you can't host a page or redirect yourself and need to change destinations often, a dynamic service can be convenient. Check what happens to your printed codes if you cancel.
